60th Anniversary of the Stagnone Tragedy: Marsala Remembers Its Lost Children

This year's May Day in Marsala commemorates the somber milestone of the 60th anniversary of the Stagnone Tragedy. What was meant to be a day of joy and carefree outings for the youths of the Casa della Divina Provvidenza turned into a harrowing ordeal, resulting in 17 fatalities and 14 injuries.

The fateful events unfolded as fathers from the Salesian Order organized an excursion for students from the Marsala boarding school to the island of Mozia. Approximately 100 boys, accompanied by priests and clerics from the institute, embarked on three small boats - the "Giovanni III," "Vincenzo," and "Giuseppe Maria." One of these vessels, helmed by Giovanni Impicciché and carrying Don Calogero Falzone and cleric Vincenzo Sagona, tragically capsized, claiming Sagona's life. The boat, overcrowded with 34 passengers, struggled to navigate and ultimately succumbed to imbalance and flooding, leading to the catastrophic overturning. Despite valiant efforts by older students to assist their younger counterparts, the disaster resulted in numerous casualties, with some trapped beneath the vessel.

Among the 17 victims were Antonino Messina, Carmelo Orlando, Vincenzo Sagona, Giovanni Caravello, Rosario Mugavero, Salvatore Madelio, Domenico Papaleo, Camillo Lo Presti, Paolo Lo Presti, Francesco Ruffino, Domenico Tirrito, Giovanni Tirrito, Michele Borrello, Antonino Ruggirello, Renato Consoli, Vincenzo Capizzi, and Michelangelo Turrisi.

The impact of the tragedy extended beyond Marsala, affecting communities across Sicily. Relatives of the young victims, gathered in Marsala for the 50th anniversary organized by the Porta d’Occidente Marsala Association, reminisced about the beloved lost ones. Nino Ienna, the association's president and author of "Gli angeli dello Stagnone" (The Angels of the Stagnone), chronicled the disaster's aftermath in his book.

As the 60th anniversary approaches, former students of the Casa Divina Provvidenza penned a letter to the Mayor of Marsala, proposing the establishment of the "Marsalese Day of Remembrance." The letter reflects on the significance of commemorating the tragic event and advocates for a solemn civic ceremony to honor the victims and promote a culture of responsibility and safety for the city's youth.

As Marsala prepares to solemnly commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Stagnone Tragedy, the city stands united in remembrance, reflection, and solidarity. The proposed establishment of the "Marsalese Day of Remembrance" serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the young lives lost and underscores the community's commitment to preserving their memory for generations to come.
