Mafia murder of journalist Siani marked on 40th Anniv.

Italy on Tuesday paid tribute to Giancarlo Siani, a brilliant 26-year-old crime reporter for Naples-based daily newspaper Il Mattino on the 40th anniversary of his murder by the Camorra mafia.
"Remembering the sacrifice of Siani inevitably brings to mind the many journalists who have died because they were guilty of bearing witness to the truth, of reporting on violations of law, aggression, wars, merciless extermination," President Sergio Mattarella said in a statement "Murdering journalists means murdering our freedoms.
"Giancarlo Siani was barbarously killed by Camorra killers because he had shone the light on the criminal activities of clans, revealed their internal conflicts, the cowardice that characterizes them".
Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi laid a wreath at a ceremony at the spot near Siani's home where he was killed.
