Carole Bouquet's Cinematic Journey to Pantelleria: From Actress to Esteemed Winemaker"
Carole Bouquet, renowned for her cinematic and theatrical prowess, has ventured beyond the spotlight into the sun-soaked vineyards of Pantelleria. A celebrated actress on the silver screen, she has seamlessly transitioned into the esteemed role of a vigneron. Her decision to delve into the art of winemaking on this rugged island was far from an obvious choice.
Discovering Pantelleria:
Having stumbled upon a small dammuso for sale on the island 27 years ago, Bouquet embarked on a journey of cultivating the land. Despite her fame, she chose to confront the challenges posed by this harsh terrain. In an interview with Corriere della Sera, she recounts the hurdles: "The land, abandoned for a long time, was tough due to the obsidian rocks, the vines low like bonsai, and it was impossible to use technological tools." However, overcoming these difficulties, she transformed this land into wine, earning the prestigious Luigi Vernonelli award in 2011 for the best Italian wine produced by a foreigner.
Heroic Viticulture in Pantelleria:
The agricultural context of Pantelleria is nothing short of a heroic journey: rocky soil, strong winds, scarce rainfall, terracing, and manual harvesting. Bouquet faced these environmental challenges head-on, employing techniques like dry-stone walls, the Pantescan "bonsai" method, and shallow 20-centimeter basins. Despite its ruggedness, this landscape provides the opportunity to create unique wines that capture the essence of Pantelleria in a way that cannot be replicated elsewhere in the world.
Carole Bouquet's foray into winemaking on Pantelleria is not just a personal endeavor; it's a story of resilience, innovation, and a deep connection to the land that has resulted in wines that are a true reflection of the island's unique terroir.
