Breakthrough Arrests: Unraveling Decades-Old Mafia Murders in Sicily
In a significant breakthrough, authorities have identified the masterminds and perpetrators behind ten Mafia-style murders that occurred in the 1990s in the Barcellona area of Messina. The Carabinieri of the ROS, with support from the provincial command of Messina, conducted a dawn operation resulting in the arrest of seven individuals. The judicial custody order was issued by Judge Ornella Pastore, following a request from the Messina Public Prosecutor Rosa Raffa, supported by Deputy Prosecutor Vito Di Giorgio, and deputy prosecutors Fabrizio Monaco and Francesco Massara from the district anti-Mafia office.
Background:
Initiated in January 2023, the investigations unveiled previously obscure details surrounding thirteen attacks carried out between 1992 and 1998 along the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. Among the murders was that of Angelo Ferro, an agronomist killed on May 27, 1993, in Milazzo, linked to the capture of the boss Nitto Santapaola. Other cases include the double murder of Antonino Accetta and Giuseppe Pirri on January 21, 1992, in the cemetery of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, and the assassination of Carmelo Ingegneri on July 11, 1992, in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto. The victims ranged from 21 to 55 years old.
Key Findings and Collaborator's Testimony:
The decisive impetus for the investigations came from the testimony of collaborator of justice Salvatore Micale, a former member of the Barcellona Mafia. His statements facilitated the identification of the masterminds, perpetrators, and "collaborators" involved in the thirteen unsolved murders. The seven individuals, with varying roles, reportedly participated in the ambushes using firearms, catching the victims by surprise. Furthermore, the investigations revealed that some murders were ordered by the leaders of the Barcellona Mafia to "punish" individuals accused of theft or drug trafficking without obtaining approval from Cosa Nostra.
Legal Proceedings and Proactive Prosecution:
The judicial custody order underscores the commitment of the legal authorities to bring justice to these long-pending cases. Led by the Messina Public Prosecutor's office, the proactive prosecution, supported by the district anti-Mafia unit, has been instrumental in shedding light on a dark chapter in the region's history.
Conclusion:
The arrests mark a significant step in resolving decades-old Mafia-related crimes, bringing closure to the families of the victims and reaffirming the commitment of law enforcement to combat organized crime in the region. The collaboration of Salvatore Micale stands as a testament to the importance of witnesses and informants in dismantling criminal networks and achieving justice.
