Il Gattopardo, the event series based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s iconic novel
The long-awaited release date for Il Gattopardo, the event series based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s iconic novel, has finally been revealed. The series will be available exclusively on Netflix starting March 5, 2025, showcasing the main characters portrayed by Kim Rossi Stuart as Don Fabrizio Corbera, Prince of Salina, Benedetta Porcaroli as Concetta, Deva Cassel as Angelica, and Saul Nanni as Tancredi. The cast also includes Paolo Calabresi, Francesco Colella, Astrid Meloni, and Greta Esposito.
Produced by Fabrizio Donvito, Daniel Campos Pavoncelli, Marco Cohen, Benedetto Habib, and Alessandro Mascheroni for Indiana Production, alongside Will Gould and Frith Tiplady for Moonage Pictures, the six-episode series was filmed across Palermo, Syracuse, Catania, and Rome.
The series is directed by Tom Shankland, who helms the majority of the episodes, with Giuseppe Capotondi directing episode 4 and Laura Luchetti directing episode 5. The show was created and written by Richard Warlow, who also serves as executive producer alongside Benji Walters. Through a contemporary lens, The Leopard revisits the powerful story of the Prince of Salina and his family, reflecting on the transformation of Italy both in the past and present.
The series boasts a distinguished creative team, including cinematographer Nicolaj Bruel, costume designers Carlo Poggioli and Edoardo Russo, and production designer Dimitri Capuani. The original score is composed by Paolo Buonvino, adding to the grandeur and emotional depth of the adaptation.
Based on one of the greatest Italian novels of all time, is an epic, striking, and sensual tale set in Sicily during the 1860 uprisings. At its core is Don Fabrizio Corbera, the unforgettable Prince of Salina, who lives a life of beauty and privilege. However, as the unification of Italy threatens the Sicilian aristocracy, Fabrizio realizes that his family’s future hangs in the balance. To survive, he must forge new alliances, even if it means betraying his own principles. Ultimately, he faces an impossible choice: arranging a marriage between his wealthy and beautiful niece Angelica and his nephew Tancredi to secure his family’s future, at the cost of breaking the heart of his beloved daughter, Concetta.
Netflix's adaptation of Il Gattopardo faces a significant challenge, as it will inevitably be compared to Luchino Visconti's iconic 1963 film. Visconti's masterpiece featured an illustrious cast, including Burt Lancaster as Prince Don Fabrizio Salina, Alain Delon as Tancredi Falconeri, and Claudia Cardinale as Angelica Sedara. The film is celebrated for its meticulous depiction of 19th-century Sicilian aristocracy and remains a benchmark in Italian cinema. Netflix's new series aims to bring a fresh perspective to this classic narrative, but it must honor the original's legacy while offering a unique interpretation to resonate with contemporary audiences
