Red Cross Committee in Castelvetrano Opens Shelter for Unaccompanied Minor Immigrants

On August 31, the Castelvetrano branch of the Italian Red Cross inaugurated a reception center for unaccompanied minor immigrants, thanks to an agreement reached with Commissioner for Emergency Migrants Valerio Valenti, following a similar model implemented in Bologna. This agreement will be in effect until October.

The location allocated for this purpose is a property confiscated from the mafia, specifically a former oil mill located in the commercial area of Castelvetrano, on Viale Autonomia Siciliana. This property had been seized from the Castelvetrano entrepreneur Murania as part of an operation against organized crime in the Castelvetrano district.

The Agency for Confiscated Assets entrusted this property to the Municipality of Castelvetrano, which, through a public tender process, subsequently granted it to the Castelvetrano branch of the Italian Red Cross.

This reception camp will accommodate 220 young migrants who have arrived in Italy without any accompanying adults. These young individuals will be welcomed and will stay at the center for the first 3-5 days, during which they will undergo medical examinations and checks before being transferred to facilities designated for reception communities.
